This is a letter from Lucy Wetmore Gray on the East Coast to her husband Samuel C Gray in Benicia dated 10/17/1852. Lucy works around to bringing up the idea of their building a house of their own in Benicia. She argues that Samuel seems set on staying there at least 3 or 4 years and how nice it would be to have their own place.
She says that Samuel's ;ast letter seemed that he thought she didn't want to return to California. She does say that she is not looking forward to crossing the Isthmus with her small son. She expects the only way he can make the crossing is to be carried by "some strange Negro" which she expects will frighten him and make him sick. She does wish that she could wait for the train to be finished but knows that would be another year and she doesn't want to be away from him that long. She does wish that Samuel could come East and spend a year in idleness but seems to dismiss the idea as impractical.
She closes by talking about making Samuel's faith in religion stronger. She suggests he talk to Rev. Woodbridge or his brother Edward.
