Description

This is a letter dated12/01/1856 from Mother Rebecca Hubbard Wetmore to Lucy Gray in Benicia. The letter talks mainly of the recent Presidential election. Mrs. Wetmore is upset that Fremont, the Republican and anti-slavery ticket, didn't carry California and the country. She is also upset over the actions by the previous President in not stopping the violence in Kansas known as "Bloody Kansas" and for favoring the expansion of the slave states. She makes specific reference to Rev. Woodbridge of Benicia in saying "if Woodbridge can't see anything wrong in regard to Kansas, he is either willfully blind or annoyingly ignorant..". (Rev. Woodbridge's pro-Southern beliefs eventually forced SCG to leave his church for St. Paul's.)
