Description

This is a letter dated 12/27/1856 from Ms. Mary Gray to her brother Mr. Samuel C. Gray regarding mainly her travels. Mary talks in detail about her trip to Boston and the relatives she saw and the local news she has heard. She attends the Franklin Celebration in Boston in honor of the new statue being erected of Benjamin Franklin. She visits Mount Auburn cemetery and the Mechanics Fair. She then talks of her visit to Providence and seeing William Blanding and his wife. She stayed three weeks and had a delightful time. (NOTE: Family tree information shows that Mary J Gray was married to a William Blanding in 1844 in Providence , R.I. This seems to conflict with the account in this letter, or this is a different Blanding family.) The letter continues with more travel news and news of friends and family. There seems to be a page or two missing as the last page doesn't seem to fit with the closing note written on page one in the margin about her sister Maria.
