Description

This is a letter from Edward Crocker in New Bedford to Samuel C Gray in Benicia and dated 03/03/1858. It talks of the loan to Mr. Woodbridge (Rev. Sylvester Woodbridge - 1813 to 1883). M<r Woodbridge has asked to postpone the payment of his interest on the loan. He was buying a number of parcels of land to protect his stock. Mr. Crocker has doubts about his ability to repay the loan due to Mr. Woodbridge's "precarious" salary, large family (6 children living with him in 1860 census) and the fact that the land purchases may not be able to be sold at a profit. Mr. Crocker has several reasons why he thinks there will be increased population in California over the near term.
