Gray Letters 1858 07 15Entry/Object ID
2024.10.1.311Description
This is a letter, year unknown, but dated Thursday, 07/15 from Mother Rebecca Hubbard Wetmore to Lucy Gray in Benicia. Rebecca mentions a trip Lucy took to the bubbling or boiling springs which could be a spa somewhere in Northern California. She also mentions having read about the large trees (Redwoods) that she would like to visit.
She says she thinks her son Chauncey will have to come home because of his financial situation. She proposes giving him a farm they own if none of the other children object. In passing she mentions that she is glad that the Hastings boy is O.K. (This is probably referring to the riding accident that 10 year old Willie Hastings had in June of 1858. see news clipping below.) The accident and the fact that the letter is dated Thursday, July 15th, makes the year 1858.
