Description

This is a letter from Edward Crocker in Benicia to Samuel C Gray traveling and dated 04/19/1859. It gives the news of the day from the Bay Area. One piece of news is that a bill has been introduced to repeal the Charter that established Benicia. Other news is that they have fenced in a cemetery lot purchased by the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodge. Mr. Gray's house is for rent and a Mr. Murry asked about it as he hopes to get the Episcopal Minister to reside there. Mrs. Jones had a Whist party. Miss Hancock, a teacher at Young Ladies Seminary, is returning to Sacramento and will have to be replaced. Mr. Crocker reports a letter to Mr. Gray from a Mr. Sewell requesting Samuel to help him collect a debt from his brother-in-law Chauncey Wetmore. He says that John "Sanborn" is doing well working at the store but does have a Sanborne family characteristic "viz a propensity to sit down". (note: A newspaper ad from 1857 shows the S C Gray store was at the SE corner of First and D streets in Benicia.)
