Description

This is a letter from Edward Crocker in Benicia to Samuel C Gray traveling and dated 05/03/1859. It gives the news of the day from the Bay Area. It starts with Mr. Crocker expressing surprise that Mr. Gray's letter from Acapulco / Panama arrived so quickly on the Stephen. He attributes this to the "sailing qualities" of the Age. Other news concerns Mr. C.E. Wetmore's sister, Cornelia, has "taken to drink". Not sure what this may mean as in other letters Mr. Wetmore has expressed disgust with liquor and doesn't want to sell it. This may mean that the Wetmore's were opposed to any drinking and even Cornelia taking up social drinking may be looked down upon. Mr. Crocker comments on the results of the election held the prior day. He is displeased that Mr. Allison, Berry, and Hayden have been elected Trustees.
