Gray Letters 1859 06 18Entry/Object ID
2024.10.1.289Description
This is a letter probably from Rebecca Wetmore to Lucy Gray regarding family affairs. The letter is written in a cross-hatch fashion and the first two pages are very hard to read. The last two pages talk of Henry Wetmore's (1828 - 1889) wife Mary Winn (1835 - 1871). The letter writer has evidently expressed her feelings against Mary and she is trying to explain what she may have said and to whom.
At one point she talks of Henry naming "the baby" after her. Henry and Mary had a child, Lucy Wetmore (06/1859 - 1918) in June of 1859 and this must be the child being talked about.
There are several odd things about this letter. It talks of "mother's" health which suggests it isn't from Rebecca Wetmore but rather one of Lucy's sisters. The letter says that Thanksgiving is next week but the letter is written in June not November. The letter talks of Mr. Gray and Maria. This is probably Dr. Edward Gray (1822 - 1902) and his wife Maria (1834 - 1918).
