Description

This is a letter from Edward Crocker in New Bedford, MA to Samuel C Gray in Benicia dated 12/07/1862. Mr. Crocker thanks Mr. Gray for his last letter containing much news of Benicia. They discuss Mr. Hyde operating a new foundry after working with windmills, Mr. Hubbard's death, improvements in Mr. Gray's house and the Carte de Visite of Mr. Gray that he sent to Mr. Crocker. Mr. Crocker's wife is starting a photo album for all of their friends and family's photographs. The death of Mr. Hubbard in the Civil War prompts Mr. Crocker to talk about his family's involvement in the War. He talks about his brother Lt. Frederick Crocker who has been in the Navy since the start of the war. He then recounts his heroic exploits at Sabine Pass in Texas. There are several online accounts of this action and others involving Lt. Frederick Crocker.
