2024.10.1.166Description
This is a letter from Samuel C Gray to the Bishop of St. Paul's Church in Benicia with no date shown. In the letter, Gray seeks guidance regarding the musical aspect of church services, which he has managed for the past eighteen years without formal qualifications. He expresses his commitment to fulfilling the expectations of the congregation and notes he is prepared to step aside if necessary. Gray mentions that volunteers have recently assisted him, and he strives to render an acceptable service. He requests feedback from the bishop on whether the current efforts meet approval and is willing to adapt accordingly. Gray also assures his dedication to continue contributing and wishes to align with the bishop's directives for future service.
Attached is a blank ledger page for Church expenses.
NOTE: This could be related to a problem discussed between Samuel and his brother Rev. Edward Gray in letters in 1880. He joined St' Paul's about 1862/63 so that would fit with directing music here for 18 years. It is also within a year of his wife, Lucy's, death. He may be under some mental stress.Collection
