This is a letter from Samuel C Gray to his son Dr. Edward Gray (1849 - 1920) dated 10/04/1891. Samuel Gray and his wife, Martha, are traveling and Samuel is letting his children know how they are doing and where they have been traveling.
In this letter he describes their journey to Hagerstown and a stop on the way in Pen Mar (named for its closeness to Pennsylvania and Maryland borders). He says they stayed with cousin Alfred, his wife and daughter Caroline. On one excursion they met a Mr. Bell the editor of the Hagerstown newspaper, Hagerstown Mail". He had been in California 1849 - 1857 and worked at several newspapers there and knew several of the same people as Samuel Gray.
Samuel says their next stop is Boston for about 10 days and then returning to California via the Southern route including Columbus, GA.Collection
