This is a letter from Lucy Gray in Benicia to Samuel Gray probably in San Fracisco. She talks of exchanging a corsit tha her daughter Gertie has but says it is not the kind of transaction a man should handle. She then talks about getting a "boy" (servant) and the qualities he should have to meet her requirements. If it is a Chinese servant then she is afraid they will go down to the "wash house" without finishing their chores. (Not sure what she means by a "wash house".) Lastly, she talks about Samuel starting to deal in real estate.
