The Peoples Almanack for 1848 has approximately 30 pages with the cover picture of a Lady with Staff and Septer standing over a serpent with a broken sword and severed head.
The pamphlet presents fascinating reading of various topics from testimonies of the cure of Scurvy to political commentaries on Religious Freedom and Political Freedom. The commentaries are as true today as when written.
The first part of Political Freedom reads: It is impossible that the interests of the many can be duly cared for while those who make the laws are chosen by the few. Class legislation is the parent of most of the political wrongs and social ills under which the people groan; and it will always seek its own rather than the people's. They have always had to writhe under a system, which offered no protection to their industry, and lay upon them an enormous weight of taxation to sustain a dominant class. Their labor contributes to the revenue, over the expenditures of which they have no control. The evils of aristocratic misrule have seen in the long and ruinous wars which have left the nation Eight Hundred Millions as a national debt.........Collection
