This is a copy of the treaty that James Marshall and J.A. Sutter negotiated with the local tribes after discovering gold in January, 1848. The treaty is with Pulpuli, Chief - Gesn, Chief - Colule, Alalde - and Sole, Alalde. It gives Sutter and Marshall rights to rent the land where they have their mill for 20 years at $150 per year.
When the treaty was filed with the Military Government in Monterey, it was rejected. They did not recognize the "right of Indians to lease, rent or sell land".Collection
