Accounts Ledger attributed to James Barry, a bill collector and Notary in Benicia; dates run roughly from 1882 to 1892; there are many historical names and businesses entered on the pages along with entries from other cities and counties; The brown cover is stained and worn. There is black ornamental printing around the edges and into the center on the front and the back. on spine: "Ledger" "5" size: 12-1/2" x 8" x 1" Information from Black Swan Books an internet book seller: "A meticulously-kept ledger of bill collector and Notary Public James Barry of Benicia, California. Mr. Barry appears to have been the San Francisco agent of Commercial Union Assurance Co., Limited of London. The exhaustive ledger contains a complete record of transactions with local residents of Benicia. Also included are approximately 75 billheads and deeds of sale from local retailers, the majority of which are made out to Mrs. James Barry, who appears to have been an experienced shopper. This book offers accidental glimpses into life at the turn of the century, such as a woman paying $5.00 (a sizable amount at the time) to make a phone call to her grandchild and a note that Captain Dillingham, a regionally renowned sailor, was renting rooms near the San Francisco Bay."
