Scope and Content

This is a ledger from 1851 of the lots in Benicia. It was compiled by Stephen Cooper who was the Solano County Assessor at the time. It was filed by Saisbul Bynum who was the Solano County Clerk. Pasted in the front is a 2 page letter from Stephen Cooper of "additional Tax List". It contains information about Baysi, I. Long & Co., and Richmond I. The ledger has an alphabetical section which has not been used. The rest of the ledger shows each lot in Benicia and the following columns: Owners Names Description of Land Value of Personal Property City of Benicia Lot number Block Number Value of Lot Value of Improvements The first lot is #1 on block "Semple's Slip". It was owned by Hayden & Mudgo and valued at $1,000 with $2,000 value of improvements. The last lot is lot #16 in block Little's Point. It is owned by Thomas Larkin and valued at $600. Very few lots show improvements. Some that do, besides the first one, are: lot # block # value 5 1 $3,000 11 1 $1,000 4 7 $2,700 13 7 $2,000 5 8 $2,500 11 8 $100 10 13 $1,500 11 13 $ 250 10 14 $ 800 11 15 $ 500 6 17 $ 100 7 19 $ 800 4 24 $1,500 3 27 $ 800 3 28 $2,000 13 29 $2,250 9 37 $1,000 9 38 $ 200 4 39 $ 100 7 40 $ 800 12 42 $ 100 15 43 $1,000 3 57 $3,000 8 58 $1,000 9 58 $ 150 10 58 $ 600 Improvements don't always mean a house or other building was constructed but it may. Attached is a copy of Barlow map from 1847 with each lot that showed an improvement marked in red.
