This is a facsimile of a historic letter having to do with the discovery of gold in California. It was a series put out by the Book Club of California in December of 1948. We have seven of at least a series of 12.

This one says Number 4 Edward C Kemble to John S Hittell. Edward C Kemble was the editor of the California Star newspaper in San Francisco. He made a trip to visit the mines and came back to report that the wealth of that part of the country is a sham. Within 6 weeks that was proven wrong and Kemble and his staff set out for the mines. This letter, written in 1885, is a rebutle of an article written by Mr Hittell about Kemble's part in the early gold discovery story.Collection
