Scope and Content

This is a facsimile of a historic letter having to do with the discovery of gold in California. It was a series put out by the Book Club of California in December of 1948. A letter from Stephen Reynolds to Thomas O. Larkin, November, 1848.- 12. Robert Semple to Thomas O. Larkin. We have letters 1 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10 / 12 This one says Number 4 Edward C Kemble to John S Hittell. Edward C Kemble was the editor of the California Star newspaper in San Francisco. He made a trip to visit the mines and came back to report that the wealth of that part of the country is a sham. Within 6 weeks that was proven wrong and Kemble and his staff set out for the mines. This letter, written in 1885, is a rebutle of an article written by Mr Hittell about Kemble's part in the early gold discovery story.
