Scope and Content

This is a facsimile of a historic letter having to do with the discovery of gold in California. It was a series put out by the Book Club of California in December of 1948. We have letters 1 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10 / 12 This one is letter 12, from Robert Semple to Thomas O. Larkin dated 12/1848. Semple is upset with Larkin for building houses in Yerba Buena rather than promoting the sale of lots in Benicia. He sees this as driving away business from Benicia and offers to purchase Larkins unsold lots in Benicia for $15,000 in gold dust.
