The letter is from Robert Ferrier in mauch Chunk, Carbon county, PA on 01/15/1849 to his cousin. Not sure where she lives but he does mention that she lost her husband. He also mentions they last saw each other when they parted in Liverpool. He talks about his voyage to America and that he landed in New York without any money a few days before Christmas. He traveled from NY to Mauch Chunk (95 miles) without money and was very hungary. He talks of coming to see her maybe in the Spring and wants to know if she needs anything.
In one section he talks of sending for his sister, Margaret last Fall and how expensive it was ($50 for passage and clothes).

This is based on census records. Robert probably worked for the railroad in 1849 when he talked about visiting his cousin. By 1880 census he is a farmer in Liberty, Adams cty, Illinois.Collection
