Scope and Content

Letter from Harvey in Linchburgh (sic) to his wife Mary. The soldier describes their travel and experiences. Says he will write again soon. Alexander Harvey Calhoun was born on April 15, 1841 and died at age 59 on January 28, 1901 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Calhoun was buried at Blairsville Cemetery in Blairsville, Indiana Country, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Calhoun and Nancy Robinson. Calhoun married Mary Ann Henry (1843 - 1927) who was born in West Virginia and died in Pennsylvania. Mary Ann was the child of Anne Jane Grey and William Henry who were both born in Ireland and died in Pennsylvania in 1880. Mary Ann's mother had been married to a man with the last name Piper. Calhoun was a wagon and carriage maker in West Lebanon, PA until 1884. He moved to Blairsville, PA in 1884 and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a carpenter until 1899. A serious accident hindered his ability to continue working. Calhoun also served with the Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. These volunteers were recruited in Indiana County. As a part of the 206th Regiment he served from August 30, 1864 until June 26, 1865 as a private. The 206th Regiment Infantry was organized in Pittsburg, PA in September of 1864. Overall, the regiment lost 30 men; 1 during service and 29 to disease. The regiment mustered out on June 26, 1865. 206th Regiment Action/ Activities: Left State for City Point, Va., September 9. Attached to Provisional Brigade, Defenses of Bermuda Hundred, Army of the James, to October, 1864. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 10th Corps, Army James, to December, 1864. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 24th Army Corps, to June, 1865. SERVICE.--Duty with Engineer Corps engaged in fatigue duty at Dutch Gap, Va., until October 26, 1864. Duty in trenches before Richmond north of the James until April. 1865. Occupation of Richmond April 3. (Temporarily attached to Devens' 3rd Division, March 27 to April 22.) Provost duty at Richmond until May. At Lynchburg and Richmond until June.
