Scope and Content

Another letter to H Dickson's brother, William. Three Knives 20 March 1857 Dear William Your favour has come to hand. I have noted its contents. I have only to say that your terms cannot be complied with at the time of your Aunts death. There was comparatively little money on hand. The estate owed three thousand three hundred pounds. It took me some time to collect as much as paid off this debt as money has been very scarce here for the last two years and again I cannot begin to buy any 'till I can buy all and there are still two of the heirs I cannot find. Johny (sic) Dickson and a son of George Dickson he writes me that his son is in Jamacia but that is a wide ____ I have written three times to St Louis trying to find Johny but have had no answer. I cannot agree to pay the whole sum at any time at once for I could not for a long time command #7.500 and pay #50 per year legacies if I get all to consent to sell I may be able to pay half in 1857. It would be folly for me to get myself into difficulty by promising to do more than I can perform. Elizabethis well alsofriends in Richmond if I make any progress about this business I will advise you of it and you can act your pleasure. It is no great advantage to me to give up half my income the reasons why I would buy has I believe been explained to you in former letters. With kind regards to your wife and family. I remain your ____ Aunt. H Dickson
