This is a letter Mrs. Calvin G. Cassel wrote to people trying to arrange a ceremony for the celebration of the Benicia Barracks in 1985. She also details her family history in Benicia.
Her great-grandmother, Anne Elizabeth Short was living with her mother and siblings at the Benicia Barracks in 1852. Her father, Sgt. Richard Short, died enroute in Panama.
In 1858 her great-grandmother married Valentine Newmark while he was stationed at the barracks. He became a doctor and practiced in Benicia until his death in 1889. Their daughter, Hannah Newmark married Alfred Dalton Jr.Collection
