Scope and Content

This letter is from Briscoe G. Baldwin to Captain Callender in Benicia. He is withdrawing his refusal to carry out the order to take an inventory in Monterey and instead wants to do the inventory and then present a complaint to a higher command. In the Stone journal we see this letter and the decision from Callender that he may proceed with the inventory. NOTE: In the list of actions shown in the ledger in record 1994.007.0002, it shows that on 06/06/1858 "B.G. Baldwin was relieved from duty in compliance with orders from War Dept May 14, 1858".
