Scope and Content

This is a letter from the deceased Blacksmith's brother asking about his final wages dated December 14, 1858. The Blacksmith was Patrick Gardner who died on the steam ship "New World" when he was pushed down the stairs on the boat. His wife died about a year later in a San Francisco County Home. The brother says that the family has never received Patrick's final wages and he will distribute them to the children of his brother. See a Word file with the Coroner's Inquest into the death of the brother, Patrick Gardner in the Multimedia section. The jurors in the inquest returned a verdict that the death resulted from a fall down the stairs as a result of a push by John D. Watson a clerk on the steamer New World.
