Scope and Content

Letter from Robert Rutledge to his friend Charley reguarding his fourth of July experience: St. Louis July /14 12 Friend Charley I received your answers in due time I was glad to hear that you were all well as we all are at present. From what you say you must not make many visits at Gold Hill. I think they have made a very poor choice for post master there I think the mistress will have more to say about the mail than the master. The weather is very sultry here now. I guess you had a nice time on the fourth. it was a grand day here the celibration (sic) of Bridge and fourth was on the same day the procession was fifteen miles long and was four and a half hours in passing one place every table was represented they were in wagons and each trades man was pretending to be working at his trade they all had the material with them the tinners would make little tin cups and throw them out in the crowd as they passed. There was inted (?) to be a grand time of fireworks at night but it turned out one of the grandest fizzles ever expected by a crowd who intend to see so much the committee on the fireworks are quarling yet about it each one blames the other for not having them better there were about two hundred thousand people gathered to witness the grand display of fireworks and nearly as many disappointed. What does your father do on the ditch does he work at his trade. No more this time. Write soon Robert Rutledge 815 North 21st St. Louis, MO
