Scope and Content

Letter written November 15th, 1864 by Dona Benicia d 'de Vallejo to Guadalupe. The letter is written on a lined piece of folded paper. On the bottom of the inside page is written in pencil "gift of Francisca Vallejo McGethgan (sic) to Mr & Mrs Richard R Emparan". It is in Spanish. Ms. Martha McGettigan (gr g'daughter of General Vallejo and Dona Benicia) says the name "Ula" refers to Uladislao, the 10th child of the General and Dona Benicia (1845 - ?). She is not sure why the sentences following that name are in the feminine but is researching it. Two translations of the letter follow: November 15, 1864 Sonoma Guadalupe, I received your latter of ___________. I have seen in the public (newspapers?) and I was thinking that you had done something for V la(?) when you write to him tell him to come (home). I hope that nothing has happened to him (her), poor V la(?). At home we are well, nothing new has happened. About a month ago Luis(?) also was here. Enrique y _______ Montenegro and he returned with them to Napa. Fifteen days later Enrique returned alone and I asked him about Luis. He told me that he (Luis) was at Luz's(?) home and he told me that every day he would go to San Francisco(?). I will ask and I will let you know. Ask Estrada if he forgot the potatoes? Benicia L d 'de Vallejo ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guadalupe, I received your letter dated the 10th.
