LIFE Magazine Volume 1 Number 1 November 23, 1936 cost: 10 cents The first issue of LIFE Magazine, when it shifted to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism, was published by Time Inc., Chicago ILL. Henry Luce's LIFE was the first all-photographic American news magazine and it dominated the market for more than 40 years. 94 pages 10-1/2"W x 14"L Photographs of people and places are mostly in black and white although there are a number of color advertisements. When LIFEmagazine initially began publishing in 1883 it was as a humor and general interest magazine somewhat like the British magazine, Puck.
