Scope and Content

Life Magazine, December 3, 1956. One of a series of seven LIFE magazines from a 10 year period from 1947 to 1957. Fifteen years after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Life looks back with the first of a series of three articles by Walter Lord. He writes "'Day of Infamy': The untold story of Pearly Harbor reveals how Japanese admirals, spies, airmen and sailors sweated out a mission to rock the world." The cover shows the half-submerged hulk of the battleship "Arizona". This mighty ship lies at Pearl Harbor with its flag at half-mast as a permanent memorial to December 7, 1941. Page 3 is a full page add for 'The Encyclopedia American' priced from $299.50 to $600.00. LIFE was an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name, and shifted it to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. LIFE was published weekly until 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 to 2002.
