Scope and Content

Life Magazine - July 20, 1959 Cover of Ingema Johansson and his friend Birgit Lundgren while visiting friends in Florida. Ingemar Johansson was born in Sweden and was the heavyweight champion of the world. He was described as "The most famous Swedish conqueror since Charles XII--the 18th Century king who licked the Russians". A long article on Gamal Abdel Nasser, the President of Egypt. He argues his refusal to tie himself to East or West and felt this was best for the Arab world. A 10 by 8 foot painting by Rubens was auctioned at Sotheby's in London for $770,000. (Four decades later a 9x13 inch Rubens sold by the save auction house for $76.7 million) LIFE was an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name, and shifted it to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. LIFE was published weekly until 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 to 2002. Included a scan of the original Object Inventory Worksheet from 1993
