Life Magazine for September 28, 1959 features a foldout cover photo of Migrating Wild Ducks on the water and in the air above Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge in northern California.
Nikita Khrushchev was pictured in a multipage article of his, along with his wife, visit to the United Nations with an editorial article by Averell Harriman, the respected elder statesman who was the war time ambassador to the U.S.S.R. This is one year before the infamous 'shoe banging' incident in the United Nations; whose actual existance is in question. An iconic photograph showing the incident was a fake 'photoshopped' shoe placed into another picture of Khrushchev.
LIFE was an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name, and shifted it to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. LIFE was published weekly until 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 to 2002.Collection
