This is the cover to a magazine called "The Outlook Illustrated" from 10/07/1899. The cover shows a military man with a large mustache. On the back is an ad for "Pears' Soap" which is said to be the first step toward "lightening the White Man's Burden". This exemplifies the thinking in the world at the start of the 20th century.
The phrase came from a Rudyard Kipling poem published in 1899. The poem concerned the U.S. and the Philipines and presents the relationship in a very condescending and racist manner.Collection
