This is a map of the Benicia Arsenal made under the direction of Col. J.W. Ripley to be used to designate which part of the property is to be set apart for an "Arsenal of Construction". This map is mentioned in several letters in the collection. Examples are listed below:

I have the honor to transmit herewith, letters to Lt. Col. Swords, with his recommendation and that of the General Commanding the Department of the Pacific, in relation to transfer of ground to the Benicia Arsenal, etc. together with a map of the whole Military Reserve.
The condition recommended by Lt. Col. Swords, that the unoccupied officers quarters standing at the point marked "H" on the map, be moved to where they may be organized in the neighborhood of course to some point on the Quartermaster's ground.
The proposition recommended, is written out on the map, and if the Hon. Secretary approves the same, the map itself might be returned through me to the Head Quarters of the Department of the Pacific, and the necessary orders in the case issue therefrom.

Referring to the Enclosed map, the grounds at present occupied by the Benicia Arsenal, are indicated by the plain red lines, in addition to which an entire separate and distinct portion of the reserve, indicated by the yellow lines, has been assigned to the arsenal for Continuing the Construction of the same.Collection
