This is a matchbook from the Costa Fishing Resort. The Costa Fishing Resort was at 1090 West K street in Benicia. The fishing resort was started by Manuel Rito Costa who lived at 1080 W. K st.. The 1940 census shows he ran the business with his son Antone. He came from the Azores and was born in 1872.
The book Great Expectations describes him like this:
"Atypical of the Portuguese and Azoreans was Manuel Costa of 1080 West K Street. His Costa Resort, on a wharf in the Strait, rented 38 rowboats for two bucks a day, apiece. He also ran a launch which would take you, for four bits, out to his anchored fishing barge and back."
His business would be on West K between 9th Street pier and the Turner Park. It would have been about where the bench and viewpoint is now (see attached photo).Collection
