Description

Medal awarded to Henrietta Riddell-Fish at the 1885 Mechanic's Institute Fair in San Francisco. She was awarded the medal for best painted single screen. The medals were designed by the artist Charles Nahl. The Mechanic's Institute was an organization started in 1854 an "insitute- a school of technology, a library and a lecture hall for the education and advancement of toilers in the field of mechanical arts". It was an educational institute for artisans. The Mechanics' Institute held 31 fairs between 1857 and 1899, when the fairs were discontinued. Charles Christian Nahl designed the MI medals. Georg Albrecht (Albert) Ferdinand Kuner (1819-1906) is credited with creating the dies for the medals (cast in silver and bronze).
