B/W photograph military personnel at the Post Hospital (Benicia Arsenal) the first military hospital built in the West (1856), constructed of native sandstone blocks. Casualties from troop skirmishes with Indian marauders as far awary as the Northwest Territory were brought here for treatment. During World War I, the building served as the Post Chapel. The hospital remained in use through the Korean War. Currently the Post Hospital is on land owned by Amports. (from Images of America Benicia)Collection
