Description

A residential street. 200 block of West "J" street in Benicia. Second house on right was the home of William Colby (one of the founders of the Sierra Club - secretary). His parents deserve mention, as his father was Senator Gilbert Winslow Colby (represented Sacramento) who was original owner of 1869 home; his mother Caroline Amelia Smith Colby who taught at the Young Ladies Seminary nearby in the 1860s. Gilbert and Caroline were historical figures in Benicia. Will Colby was 4 when his mother died in 1879; 6 when his father died in 1881.
