Description

This photo is one of a series of photos of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. This photo shows a corner grocery store called "Family Grocery". It is also the site of a sign painting business. There are several men standing outside. On the right is a cart with a freshly painted sign. Just above the word "OWL" on the right side of the building is a sign for "Varney and Green". They were a sign painting company in several Bay area cities at the time. It could be their business advertized as being upstairs in this building or the "OWL" sign could be one of their signs. Varney & Green company was owned by Jacob Charles Green and Thomas H.B. Varney between 1904 and 1908. Firm did outdoor advertising, bill posting, painted signs, street cars, railroad bulletins, fence advertising.
