Scene of the Martinez fire in 08/20/1904. The fire damaged two square blocks in downtown Martinez. Benicia sent 100 volunteer firemen across the straits in fishing boats to help battle the fire. The $100,000 blaze started in the box factory and totaly consumed many business. The Benicia volunteers were praised for the aid they rendered and not allowed to return home in damp clothing. Each Benicia fireman received new underclothing, socks, shoes, shirts, overalls, and a cap. -- per Earl BobittCollection
