Scope and Content

One of a series of eleven pamphlets published by The Associated Oil Company and addressed to Mr.E. B McNear. Each piece is a 9"x24" folded stock with a full page photograph plus a facing page of explanatory verbage. Ten of which involve the building of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay Bridge Both bridges commenced contruction in 1933. The eleventh pamphlet is similiar but involves the Tacoma Narrows Bridge project. The Associated Oil Company supplied the motor oils and lubricants used by the construction equipment. The cover is a "Proclamation - We, Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, do order and direct...that a suspension bridge be constructed from the improvements lately ordered by our royal decree at Oakland Point to Yerba Buena, from thence to the mountain range of Saucilleto...Whereof fail not unser pain of death. Given under our hand this 18th day of August, A.D. 1869, and in the 17th year of our reign, in our present Capital, the city of Oakland" As far as known this is the first published concept of bridges spanning the bay. This includes two identical pamphlets Joshua A. Norton came to San Francisco from South Africa in December 1949 and became an influential and colorful personage.
