Description

This is a small brass pin with two crossed rifles and the number "24" and the letter "D". The pin attachment is missing on the back. It probably signifies the 24th regiment company D. In 1865 the 24th regiment was a U.S. "Colored" Troop regiment. Organized at Camp William Penn, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 30, to March 30, 1865. Moved to Richmond, Virginia. Mustered out October 1, 1865. After the Civil War The twenty-fourth Infantry served in the Department of Texas from 1869-1889, Indian Territory form 1880-1888 and following 1888 in the Department of Arizona. This pin is probably a US Spanish American 24th Infantry Hat Insignia, Buffalo Soldiers.
