On Back: Benicia Historical Society The Solano. The largest train ferry in the world, the Solano of Southern Pacific's fleet, took it's first train across the Carquinez Strait December 30, 1879 and transported an average of 30 trains a day until October 15, 1930, when the Southern Pacific bridge was opened.
