Scope and Content

This is a postcard dated 09/05/1940 from Charles E. Chapman of Orinda, Ca to Gus Kyriazi of Benicia. Gus was a Benicia High School graduate in 1940 and a well known baseball player in this area. The card is telling Gus that he will be on one of two teams for the "winter-league". Either the Orinda Reds or the Berkeley Reds. He will be notified when Mr. Chapman sees him in Stockton. Chapman was a Pacific Coast scout for 20 years, working for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1921 to 1932 and the Cincinnati Reds from 1932 to 1941. He mainly scouted the Pacific Coast League, with some college scouting mixed in. Chapman died on November 17, 1941, at the Peralta Hospital in Orinda, California, from complications of a heart attack he had suffered three weeks earlier. He was 61 years old. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, California. An article in the 10/20/1940 Oakland Tribune mentions Kyriazi as the first baseman in a game for the Orinda Reds.
