Description

B/W Photograph of a man standing in front of an "ark" at the Benicia waterfront near the end of First Street. Another man is seated on an over-turned rowboat with his back to the camera. An "ark" was an old boat where people lived. In the background is a good-sized boat that has been beached (the pilot house and mast are visible). The building on the right is unidentified but is part of the industrial area at that time. The exact date of the photograph is unknown. The man in the photograph facing the camera is believed to be Henry Hartman. He is listed in the 1920 census for Benicia as a single man, 47 years of age, of Russian and Irish heritage. His occupation was listed as a fisherman. It was said he had been a "crony" of Jack London. He was only a couple of years older so could very well have hung out with Jack London when he was in Benicia.
