Description

B/W Photograph of a man sitting on a wooden walk-way next to an "ark". An "ark" is an old boat that people live on next to a shoreline. The location is near the end of First Street in the Industrial area of that time. The exact date of the photograph is unknown. The man in the photograph is believed to be Henry Hartman. He is listed in the 1920 census for Benicia as a single man, 47 years of age, of Russian and Irish descent. His occupation was listed as fisherman. It was said he had been a "crony" of Jack London. He was only a couple of years older than London, so could very well have hung out with him when he was in Benicia.
