Historic Name: John Gomo House
The original site of the Gomo House was at East I Street and East 7th Street at the top of the hill. It was moved to its current location in 1969. The home has been remodeled and restored over the years. The "front" of the house faces East 5th Street but the address is on East G Street.
The original house consisted of a parlor, two bedrooms, combination of dining room/sitting room and a kitchen.
Note: Local tradition suggests the eagle and cannon sculpture on Powder Magazine 10, built in 1857, was possibly carved by John Gomo, master mason, but he did not arrive in California until 1859. It was most likely carved by Caleb Merrill or Peter Larseneur who were master mason for construction of Magazine 2, Magazine 10 and the Clock Tower.
John Gomo participated in the construction of the Clock Tower. He also completed monument work in the Benicia City Cemetery. (an example is the sandstone work on the obelisk surround at the Goodyear grave site).Collection
