Photo of a ship at sea . The printed title says "Carmanian". The margin inscription says " May 1907". The photo has been cut down on both sides. It also looks like a painting and not an actual photo.
Found with an envelope addressed to Mr & Mrs John O'Grady - 245 West H St Benicia, CA 94510.
From Al HomatePost SF CA 94102
The postmark is 12/20/1968 from SF CA
The photo is inscribed to Miss Hurley. This is probably Mary Hurley born in California in June, 1883. She was the daughter of Kate Hurley (05/1854) the Postmistress of Port Costa from 10/27/1888 to 1915. Mrs Hurley was a widow who came to the US from Ireland in 1872 and was naturalized in 1883. The US Register of Civil, Military and Naval Service 1863-19+59 shows that she was paid $549.75 in compensation for the year ending 07/01/1889.
Mary Hurley became a music teacher based on the 1920 census.
In the 1900 census it shows Kate Hurley's mother, Bridget O'Grady, age 79 and a widow, living with Kate and Mary and Mary's sister Margaret (07/1877). It may just be a coincidence that there is an O'Grady in the family tree and the donation came from the John O'Grady estate.Collection
