This is a photograph of the Benicia Grade School basketball team. Harry has identified the 6th boy in the back row (from the left) as Carsten Johanson. Based on Carsten's 1912 date of birth, this photo was probably taken in the early 1920's.
Mr. Johanson was mayor of Benicia in 1974 succeeding Mayor Lemos. He was born 05/18/1912 to Chaska (Charles) and Mary F. Johansen. His father was born in Germany and immigrated in 1890. By trade his father was a butcher.
Carsten had an older sister, Bernice, who was two years older than he. Carsten married Mildred (unknown last name) and had at least one child, Ralph. Carsten worked at one time for Yuba Mfg. but was primarily a butcher like his father.Collection
