Description

Written below photo: "The Benicia Tannery: In 1858 Kullman Salz Co. opened the Benicia Tannery. It operated at capacity, handling about 1000 hides each day. Combined with other tanneries in Benicia, fully 1/3 of the leather manufactured in California was produced here." Photo shows five men with hoses in front of the Rolling Dept. of the Tannery. NOTE: The date of 1858 as being when Kullman, Salz opened Benicia Tannery may be incorrect. A tannery was started in Stockton by the Wagners in 1856 and Moses Kullman joined in 1869. The Benicia Tannery was started in 1873 by Robert Stewart. In 1881 Herman Kullman and Charles Hart and salz bought it out.
