Photo from the Josephine Cowell research material. Shows one of 138 ammunition igloos constructed between 1939 and 1941. Igloo A-229 was 12 inches of concrete at the base and 8" at the top and covered with 8 layers of tar paper for waterproofing, 2 " of sand and 2" of dirt. It was topped with grass and weeds. The front was flat concrete with a steel door. The igloos were spotted and camouflage for protection from attempts at bombing.Collection
