Description

Photo from the Josephine Cowell research material. Shows a tug boat with a US army identification. The back says "Benicia Arsenal's tugboat spots barges at the dock for loading or unloading. For movement of loaded barges to a point of shipment, larger tugs come daily from Oakland Army base. The larger tugs also return empty barges to the Arsenal". The Army ran its own tug service during WWII and the Korean War. The tugs sailed from Oakland daily to help move seaborne supplies. A heavy freighter was quickly loaded to light, fast moving freighters to make the run to Hawaii and replenish munitions and weapons. Photo by Posner
